Cumbernauld Colts   2  v  0  Spartans

Cumbernauld Colts’ under 20’s side have reached their second successive League Cup Final after last Friday’s 2-0 semi-final win over Spartans.

Colts started the game on the front foot and dominated the early stages managing to create several good chances to go in front but a combination of good goalkeeping and resolute defending meant that the score line remained level.

As the half progressed Spartans continued to work hard and when they did get their chances, Giles in the Colts goal was on hand to keep Spartans at bay.

Both sides were competing well and it was an excellent football display for the neutral to enjoy and 5 minutes before the half time whistle Colts took the lead through midfielder Flanagan. On the edge of the box he managed to create a half yard for himself to get the shot away and he curled it beautifully into the far corner giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The goal allowed Colts to take control of the game once more and looked to be going in 1-0 up at the break but the Colts players had another idea. Some excellent wing play down the left hand side saw Colts work the opportunity to cross than was met by make-shift striker Alex Foy to slot home at the near post increasing Colts’ lead going in at half time.

Half Time 2-0

As the teams emerged for the second half the winter fog descended into the stadium making life more difficult for both sets of players but it did not affect the quality of football that was on display for the spectators.

Both teams started the second half brightly as the visitors battled to find a way back into the game, but the Colts defence stood strong to keep hold of their clean sheet and looked to attack whenever they had possession.

Halfway through the second half Spartans thought they had been awarded a penalty as the referee blew his whistle when the Spartans forward went over in the box, but Colts were awarded a free-kick and the player was cautioned for simulation.

The visitors were continuing to press which was leaving them exposed at the back and Colts had their chances to counter and increase their lead however it wasn't to be. Nevertheless, the young Colts remained strong and managed to see the game out at 2-0 to reach their second League Cup Final in as many years.

Full-Time 2-0
