Lowland League Team / Onwards and Upwards

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the cup semi-final game against East Stirlingshire but I certainly hope to make the final. The team have been playing very well recently and they deserve so much credit because there hasn't been a settled team this season due mainly to injury. Everyone in the squad has contributed to their victories this season. It has also been great to see so many young players coming through to the first team.
The management and coaching staff do a wonderful job in creating a senior team that plays entertaining football despite the difficulties faced. I am still hoping that we can clinch a fourth place even though we have to rely on other teams dropping points but I am also hoping that the senior team can win their first piece of silverware with a victory over the best team in the league. There is no team within the Lowland league that the Colts cannot beat.

Lowland League Team / An evening of football

A Friday evening game under the floodlights against a team with a long history and a loyal support: The Shire.
The Shire brought with them one of the largest supports we have seen against the Colts. They brought some atmosphere, some humour and a longer half time queue for the pies and bovril. I have to admit that it was refreshing to see the Shire fans standing at the end of the game to applaud their team from the pitch despite the fact that the Shire only managed a draw against a team that they probably expected to beat. That is the kind of support that I hope we can build for the Colts: supportive and appreciative.
Actually, it was the Colts that did provide the more entertaining football: a creative, passing game. The Shire relied more on the long ball and physical strength. If it wasn't for a couple of errors then the Colts could have taken all three points.

Lowland League Team / The Big Game

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's big game. East Kilbride, our natural rivals, seem unstoppable but perhaps the Colts can halt their run and open up things at the top.
A good result on Wednesday evening in the cup, so the cup and league can still both be won. The Double!
We can all dream.

I think that Sunday's goalless draw against Leith Athletic is the Colt's first ever goalless draw. Can anyone confirm?

Lowland League Team / The jinx is over

I have just seen the result against Spartans: a 1-0 victory to the Colts. Fantastic!
The Spartans were our bogey team last season and this season they must be one of the favourites to win the league. That victory puts us in second position.
I am looking forward to seeing the Colts in action tomorrow. It's only the beginning of the season but Colts have recovered well from their early defeats and it's great to see them challenging at the top of the table.

A great performance! A 5-0 victory over Preston Athletic. This was more like the Colts we have come to know and love. Pressing from the first whistle to the last. Hungry for the ball and hungry for goals. Skill, creativity, pace, strength, organisation..........they had it all tonight in abundance. The goals were all a joy to witness. Fingers crossed that this is the beginning of Colt's campaign to battle at the top of the table.
(Although last time I looked at the table Colts have still not been credited with the second goal they scored against Gretna.)

No Kirwan, no Broadfoot, no O'Neill...........3 down to Gretna in half an hour, a defence that had never played together and yet Colts showed some character to fight back and get to within one goal of earning a draw. It's not the start that we would have wanted but we suffered some early losses last season and still managed to finish fourth.

I read an article in the Record this week that was mainly about Gretna fc and interestingly the Gretna manager was quoted as saying that Cumbernauld Colts were the best team football-wise that they had played against last season. Even yesterday, despite the disappointment of losing three early goals, Colts still managed to play some good football, create several chances and score two goals. So, I'm still optimistic about this season.

Lowland League Team / The New Season Beckons

It's great to see that so many of last year's squad will be part of the 16-17 campaign. What a successful season for the whole club: the senior team, the development team and the ladies team. They have all set themselves high standards to maintain and perhaps even improve on.
The Colts website continues to be of the highest quality. (I frequently visit the Inter Milan website and the Newcastle United website and neither are of the same quality)
I am looking forward to the new season and renewing my season ticket. Hopefully, more supporters will come along to Broadwood and perhaps this forum will be less dominated by my personal ramblings.
If Edinburgh City can make it into division 2, then there is no reason that we can't make it too.

What a great achievement! Finishing fourth in our first season. Some great football and some hard fought victories. Congratulations to the staff and players. Cumbernauld have a team to be proud of.

Lowland League Team / A semi-final beckons

Another good result for the Colts. It was a hard fought game against Edinburgh Uni but Colt's determination and persistence paid off in the end. A semi-final beckons against EK. (I see EK and Clyde as our natural rivals, so in my book this semi-final will be a derby game. I don't know whether other supporters or members of the club view some other team as our natural rivals. It would be interesting to know.)
I don't usually manage to get to the away games but my son and I are making plans to be there. It should be an exciting game.

Lowland League Team / Last home league game

It wasn't a great performance this afternoon but the Colts did well to grind out a 1-0 victory over Selkirk. I have managed to attend every home league game this season and it has been a pleasure to witness the beginnings of a senior football club with so much potential. The season isn't over yet and hopefully we can maintain our fourth position and perhaps have a good run in the lowland league cup.
Congratulations to Edinburgh City on winning the league, hopefully we will be able to follow in their footsteps.

Lowland League Team / A Great first half

I was at the Gretna game last night at Broadwood. What a first half! From kick off to half-time the team displayed such a powerful sense of urgency. They pressed, they harried and they attacked. They went one up but there was no let up in their energy or determination. They went two up and still the intensity continued. They played like a team that needed to win and win with plenty of goals. Even when the third goal went in, they maintained the same urgency. It was great to watch.
It was no surprise that the energy levels were lower in the second half although they went on to win 4-1.
Anyway, credit to the players and coaches for bouncing back from the poor performance and result at the weekend. It is rare to see a team put in so much effort and energy even when they are winning.

Lowland League Team / The Battle of Broadwood

Quite a contrast when compared to last week's game. In place of flowing, attractive football we saw a scrappy hard fought battle. The Stirling Uni team are a good side, they have only been beaten twice this season but one of the two teams that beat them was Cumbernauld Colts, so there was hope that we might do the double on them. Both teams fought hard and the physical side of the game, including some very tough tackles, resulted in several explosions of temper and retaliation as well as two dismissals. Anyway, well done to the Colts for managing to score a late goal that gave us a well earned draw.

Lowland League Team / A convincing win

An excellent result and a great performance. Four goals scored and none conceded.
It was a pleasure to watch some beautiful football today. Colts can play the tiki taka style so beloved of the mighty Barcelona but equally they can use the long pass to set up those players who can outrun the defence. Today they outplayed Dalbeattie Star and their victory was the result of a combination of factors: good organisation, confident goalkeeping, effective pressing, accurate and varied passing, players willing to work hard for the team, creative moves and quality finishing. It is also good to see competition for places because football nowadays depends on having a good squad. Anyway, I enjoyed the game. Hopefully when the temperature rises we get more spectators attending.
