Lowland League Team / Suspense through twitter

I don’t actually have a twitter account but thankfully I can view the Colts twitter account which meant I could keep up to date with goals scored and yellow and red cards during last night’s game. I don’t know how well we played but we seemed to be in the same situation as at the weekend when we scored a late goal and then tried to get the equaliser in the closing minutes. I do remember in our first season the opening results didn’t go our way despite some good football but we went onto take fourth position at the end of the season. Of course, since then the league has grown stronger with some famous names joining us such as East Stirlingshire and Berwick Rangers. It would certainly be a great achievement for us this season if we could challenge at the top. Every game from now on will be crucial because the top teams don’t lose many games.

Lowland League Team / A disappointing start

It was good to be able to watch Colt’s opening game through Bo’ness’s streaming service. Good quality and for free although there was no commentator available to apologise for the swearing (lol) and no need for us to hear about the player off camera who couldn’t play because of a groin problem. To be honest, these were welcome distractions from a very scrappy first half. Only in the second half when Colts went a goal down did they begin to play some good football and when they went two goals down they began to play the passing game that we supporters are more used to seeing. Then came the goal for Colts that gave us a glimmer of hope but it wasn’t to be. It will probably take some time for the new players to bond with the regulars to form a cohesive unit but the last twenty minutes certainly provided grounds for optimism. Looking forward to our first home game even if it is only through a live stream.

Lowland League Team / New Season Begins

Looking forward to the new season despite everything. I do hope that we get to see most games through streaming until the very welcome day when we fans can return to the stadiums.
Our first game this afternoon and we take on the newcomers to the league, Bo’ness United.
Let’s hope it’s a great game. Good luck to the Colts. The 20/21 season begins.

Lowland League Team / NL Broadwood Cup

The NL Broadwood Cup. A great idea. I hope it does become an annual event. I was thinking of all the NL teams that could take part in a future tournament. Apart from Colts and Clyde there could be Airdrie, Albion Rovers and Caledonian Braves.
I managed to see the highlights of Colts two games: a narrow defeat to Stirling Albion and a welcome 3-1 victory over St Mirren. Good to see some familiar faces back in action as well as some new recruits. I’m looking forward to the new season but the sooner we fans can return the better. Anyway, whatever happens I hope we have a great season.

Lowland League Team / Opportunity knocks

Two ideas occurred to me during these strange and unpredictable times:

1) Contact Lionel Messi. It seems to me that Messi could find himself in Limbo if Barcelona fail to release him from his contract and he continues to show no interest in playing for the club. Obviously, no major team can sign him while he is still under contract to Barcelona but it seems to me that Lionel Messi with his love of football and his desire to keep fit might consider a move to Cumbernauld Colts. He would be guaranteed regular playing time.

2) Also, When the new season begins we should consider enhancing our Colts TV coverage with crowd sounds. If it’s good enough for the English Premiership then it’s good enough for us. Although, come to think of it, if Messi does take up our offer and the fans can return then we won’t need added crowd sounds. 😁

Hmm....I think all this confinement is beginning to take its toll on me.

Lowland League Team / Kirwan will be missed

Sad to see the departure of Richard Kirwan. I have fond memories of the first couple of seasons in the Lowland league when my son and grandsons enjoyed watching the way in which Richard Kirwan and Stephen O’Neill combined so effectively down the left flank to create and complete so many crucial goals for the Colts. Kirwan has an amazing acceleration and pace that left many an opposition player bewildered and beaten. Every season since the Colts began playing in the Lowland league my son and I would be disappointed if we discovered Kirwan or O’Neill were not in the starting eleven. East Kilbride have certainly signed a great player. I hope he does well except when playing against the Colts. 🙂

Lowland League Team / Scottish Football is back. Hooray.

I haven’t posted since February. Everything has been so strange, so different and so unreal. Football has seemed so unimportant in the grand scale of things and yet it was something that I did miss. It was amusing to watch the multi-million pound teams of Germany and Italy playing to almost empty stadiums with the shouts of players, coaches and others echoing around the stadium. It did remind me of Broadwood. Lol. The English and Scottish coverage opted for crowd sounds and I have to admit that you do get caught up in the illusion of the crowd reacting to what is happening on the pitch. (What a great job to have choosing which crowd reaction button to press. Pressing the boo button when a player is booked or something similar.) Looking forward to the return of the Colts and the resumption of the Lowland League. I think this will be our year. 🙂

Lowland League Team / New players. New formation. New hopes.

Colts 2-0 Uni of Stirling

Good to see new players arriving to strengthen the squad. The two new signings from Queen’s Park played well. Billy Mortimer scored (along with his strike partner Michael Cunningham) and Scott Gibson looked solid at the centre of a back three. It was worrying to see Scott going off injured in the second half but he deserves credit continuing to play with the injury until the ball went out of play because during that time he made an important defensive header that very likely prevented a goal. I hope he recovers well. Credit also for Zander coming on for the second half and making an important penalty save. For someone who often features in the match programme as ‘not the sharpest tool in the box’, he has been Colts saviour on several occasions. Clearly a player with goalkeeping intelligence, whatever that might be.
Overall, a very good performance and a welcome result.

Colts 7-1 Vale of Leithen

A game that was won in the first half hour although credit to Vale of Leithen for continuing to play with determination despite being five behind at half-time. Colts attacked from the start and they created chance after chance. It was good to see the arrival of a new striker who opened his account with two goals. All in all a great day for Colts and a valuable three points.
Sad to see Fraser Team leaving the club but it is understandable that players will want to look for new opportunities for a variety of reasons. He served Colts well and produced some great moments for spectators like me. Thanks, Fraser.
I think we have a squad at the moment that can compete with every team in the league although taking points from the top four during the remainder of the season will be a tough challenge. Spartans up next.

Lowland League Team / Superb video!

My son told me that there was a video about the Colts on their twitter page. Watched it this evening. Such a well made video. As a supporter of the senior team I knew that Colts were involved in the community but I only had a vague idea. I was amazed and impressed by the many ways the Colts contribute to the community of Cumbernauld and further afield. What a great club!

Colts 3-0 Dalbeattie Star

From the kick off, it was obvious that Colts were determined to make amends for last week’s record hefty defeat. The urgency to press, to win every ball and to get goals was obvious to see. Even after the goal within the first couple of minutes there was no slowing the pace. The determination and urgency continued after the break. We had hoped it would continue second half but it’s difficult to sustain that level of energy, especially when three goals up.
Anyway, a welcome three points for us. More of the same, hopefully.
Good to see new players being brought in during the January window. Suspensions and injuries are bound to occur, so some depth of squad is needed.

Lowland League Team / New Year, fresh hopes.

2020.
To people of my age 2020 definitely has a SciFi feel to it. In fact, many of the SciFi and fantasy depictions from the 70s and 80s have now become a reality. So, we live in a world where anything can happen. I suppose that the team that defeated us last week, Gretna, bear witness to the unpredictability of life and more importantly, football. Gretna came from humble beginnings and reached the Scottish Cup final in 2006. So, who knows what the future of the Colts might be but in the meantime let’s continue our journey into the unknown with optimism and hope. Our first challenge of 2020, East Kilbride, our New Town Rivals.
All the best for the New Year to the players, management, volunteers and supporters of our beloved Club.

Lowland League Team / Soup, glorious soup.

What a cold Saturday afternoon! Thank goodness for the homemade soup! We might not be top of the league but I suspect our soup is top in the Scottish football soup league. It was the highlight of a disappointing afternoon. It was one of those ‘if only’ games. If only we had been awarded the penalty just before half-time we might have gone in at the break leading 1-0 but instead the penalty claim was turned down and the Shire broke away and scored. If only our second penalty claim was awarded we would still have been in contention. If only we hadn’t missed so many chances. If only..........
Nevertheless, when we went two goals down we started to play some great football and when we got one goal back things began to look promising but......the Shire destroyed our optimism with two more goals. The final score 4-1 didn’t reflect the ‘if only’ nature of the game but overall I suppose I have to admit reluctantly that they deserved their win.
I think the formation we played suited the talents and skills of the players we had available. I think it might prove successful in future games. Let’s hope so.

Lowland League Team / The Good and the Bad

A great away result for the Colts beating Strollers 3-2. Not an easy place to get a victory. Keeps us in contention for a top 6 finish.
The bad news: losing Craig Holmes. He has been such a great player for the club. His mazy dribbles, assists and some spectacular goals. He will be sadly missed but I am sure all the Colts fans will wish him well in his next adventure.

Colts 3-1 Caledonian Braves

What a second half performance!
A goal down at half-time. Braves had dominated and at half time it felt fortunate that we were only a goal down. Braves came very close to adding to their solitary goal, twice hitting the woodwork and two goal line clearances.
Second half, Craig Holmes was moved to the defensive playmaker position, a role that I had never seen him play. My son and I did wonder what would happen with so many attack minded players apart from the back four. Well, what happened was Colts played like a different team. Attacking and pressing as if it was a cup final. An amazing second half performance rewarded with three well taken goals and three precious points. Well done, Colts.
