Lowland League Team / Losing the right way
« on: December 22, 2018, 07:08:15 PM »
Colts 1-2 BSC

We don’t like to see our team beaten but it’s much easier to accept when we give a good account of ourselves against strong opposition. There were mistakes and misses but it was refreshing to see the energy, determination and commitment that we expect from our team. We might not be able to challenge for top spot but if we can begin a run of good results then we could better our position compared to the last two seasons. It’s good to have a full squad again with players competing for positions.
Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / A Dismal Day

Colts 1-2 Gala

Dull, cold and wet and unfortunately nothing in the game to brighten or warm the afternoon. We do seem to be going through a bad patch where things are just not clicking. Sloppy goals conceded, misplaced passes, missed chances, giving the ball away cheaply........so unlike the Colts. Despite this difficult time, there are reasons for optimism. With the return to the club of Gavin Lachlan and the return to fitness of Craig Murray, there will be greater strength in depth to our central midfield and that is perhaps the only area that we haven’t had a settled pairing. When Colts are in form there is no team in our division that cannot be beaten by us. We have great players and great coaches, so we need to put the bad results behind us and recapture the qualities and strengths that Colts stand for.

Lowland League Team / Our own Messi
« on: November 12, 2018, 08:45:57 PM »
Just read that Stephen ONeill has made history by being the first Colts player to make 100 appearances for the club. I look back with fondness on those early games when my son, grandsons and I went to Broadwood to support our local team and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the Colts especially the O’Neill/Kirwan partnership. I remember trying to persuade my younger grandson that Stephen O’Neill was none other than Lionel Messi. I don’t think he was entirely convinced but it was the skill and creativity of O’Neill that provided us with so much entertainment. He is the type of player that makes football worth watching.
Congratulations!

Lowland League Team / A bad day at the office

Colts 1-4 Gretna
I suppose all of us have days when we are just not ‘in the zone’. Thankfully, for the Colts such days are rare. It was just one of those days when the team was below par. The first half was scrappy and was probably one of the most lacklustre performances I have witnessed as a Colts fan. The second half was better but goals were given away cheaply and Gretna deserved their victory. I just hope that we can return to our winning ways. We have good players with a positive team spirit managed by two excellent coaches and supported by some dedicated volunteers. This is truly Cumbernauld’s only senior team committed to our town. Hopefully, in time, more Cumbernauldians will come out to support a great local team. Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / Lady Luck deserts us
« on: October 20, 2018, 08:57:18 PM »
A 4-1 defeat to BSC ends our Scottish Cup run for this year but I can’t help feeling that with some good fortune the game could have been so different.
When I saw the line-up and the formation I was very optimistic. One of our strongest starting 11 for a good while.
The first half was very entertaining and as we were gaining the upper hand it did look as if we might go in level at half-time and take control in the second half but a controversial and scrappy goal seconds before the half time whistle seemed to be an omen that the gods were not on our side. And then a few minutes into the second half we lost another goal. We played some good football and created several chances but despite getting one goal back we went on to lose another two. It is difficult to see what went wrong. We were as good a side as BSC but we couldn’t convert our chances into goals. Lady Luck seemed to be on their side.
The one consolation, for me, was that Colts continued to play with determination right up to the final whistle.
The Colts never give up. Forza Colts!
Good luck to BSC in the next round. They are presently playing some good football.

Lowland League Team / Yellow Derby Draw

BSC 2-2 Colts
Four goals and a game that deserves the cliche ‘a game of two halves’.
We didn’t really get going until the second half and just when it looked as if we were heading for defeat, Craig Holmes hit a shot that must be in contention for goal of the season.
Let’s hope that we can raise our game at Broadwood against BSC in the Scottish Cup because a victory could lead to a very rewarding tie against a team from the upper divisions. (Including Championship teams I believe)

Lowland League Team / Tough at the top
« on: October 05, 2018, 06:32:13 PM »
Great to see the Colts equal top with Spartans. A comfortable win against Whitehill Welfare followed by an uncomfortable 1-0 victory against Stirling Uni takes us up to 18 points. Only East Kilbride could overtake us with their game in hand. Big game tomorrow against BSC who started badly this season but have been picking up points in recent games. We had a win and a draw against them last season when they were competing for top spot, so we are certainly capable of beating them.

Lowland League Team / Convincing cup victories
« on: September 22, 2018, 06:42:57 PM »
Two convincing cup victories within eight days and good to see a variety of scorers. Maybe we can have a few good cup runs this year. After all, we are the League Cup holders.
And come to think of it, let’s win the league and do the double. (Whatever the double might mean when there are several cup competitions) Aim for the top but be satisfied with where you end up, having tried your best.
A bit of positive thinking there.
Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / Yes!!!
« on: August 29, 2018, 09:46:06 PM »
I was following the second half of tonight’s game on Twitter. A nail-biting finish. So relieved that we held on to our 3-2 lead. Beating Edusport away from home is a great result. It’s games like this that can make the difference at the end of the season. Often when the final points are tallied, two or three points can make a difference as to our final position. So pleased. Well done, lads.

Lowland League Team / Defeated but not disgraced
« on: August 26, 2018, 12:07:17 AM »
Colts 0-2 Spartans

Since we joined the Lowland League Spartans have been our greatest challenge. They are strong, fit and fast. They play entertaining football. It was no surprise to see them win the league last season and going by early form I suspect it will be a contest between East Kilbride and Spartans for the number one spot. That is not to say that Colts are not capable of battling at the top but it won't be easy against these two teams who don't lose many games.
Although Spartans dominated the first half the Colts gave a good account of themselves in the second half and created a few chances but overall Spartans deserved to win. For Colts it is one of those games where defeat can become a learning experience. Certainly the result was no disgrace.

Lowland League Team / Three out of four
« on: August 18, 2018, 08:52:25 PM »
Colts 3-2 The Shire

Three wins out of four and two of the victories have been against teams expected to be in the top four this season. A well deserved victory. The Colts players were as usual well organised, eager to win back the ball when not in possession and creative when they were in possession. It was an entertaining game and I think by now all of our opponents will know that we are a team who play football as it should be played.
The Team/Brown partnership up front looks promising as the players complement each other to form a potent duo. But once again it was a whole team performance and it brought East Stirlingshire's unbeaten run to an end.
Next game: Spartans. Another major test for us.
Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / The Thrills and Spills

What a great game! Colts 3-2 Kelty Hearts.
Our first league home game of the season. I have to admit I feared that we could be facing a heavy defeat because I had heard that Kelty not only had a much higher financial income but that they had breezed through their league last season (with only one serious rival) and that they were aiming to win the Lowland League.
Perhaps they took Colts for granted and they did dominate the early play but what a performance from the Colts. As always they pressed, they ran their hearts out (if you can forgive the pun), they created chances and they never gave up. What a victory!
We might not be a wealthy club but we have two great coaches, players who want to play for the club and give their all, people behind the scenes all doing their bit ( I did not envy the ladies at the pie and bovril stand who had to deal with one of the largest crowds that I have seen at the Colts games) and a small number of loyal supporters. Maybe, Friday evening games bring out some of the Old Firm Fans who might want to adopt Colts as their 'wee team'. There was nothing 'wee' about them last night. As my son said to me this evening after he had attended the BSC/EK game, when the Colts play well they can beat any team in the league. I agree.
Forza Colts!!

Lowland League Team / A Gala Day opener
« on: July 28, 2018, 06:33:02 PM »
Just saw the score and read through the tweets. What a good start to the season!
Any away victory is an achievement but travelling down to Gala and winning is always pleasing.
(I was a bit worried when I read in one of the Tweets that the team were heading North to Gala. I thought that the bus driver might have had his map upside down.)
Looking forward to next week's first home game of the season.
Anyway, well done to the team! Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / New Faces
« on: July 21, 2018, 08:06:20 PM »
My first Colts game since our glorious League Cup victory. A friendly against Wick Academy. It was an opportunity to see some new faces and to be entertained by Wick Academy's vocal support. (I.e. One man and a flag who provided a wide ranging repertoire of well known football chants adapted for his own team. Every team should have one brave and  eccentric supporter but I have no intention of volunteering)
It is always a bit sad to see players leaving the club in between seasons but it is inevitable in smaller clubs. Stephen Kerr and Gavin Lachlan both contributed greatly to the Colts achievements in past seasons. I'll particularly miss Gavin's dad who had become a regular Colts supporter.
Anyway, it's good to see that we have held on to almost all of last year's squad and added some promising players. Today wasn't really about winning although we did win (3-2) but Wick probably, on balance, deserved a draw. It was a good opportunity to give some of the new and the young a chance to show what they were capable of.
I am very much looking forward to the new season knowing that each year the Lowland League becomes stronger and more challenging. Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / Magnificent!!! League Cup Winners 2018
« on: May 13, 2018, 08:18:53 PM »
Just back from Galashiels. What an afternoon!
1-0 behind at half time and down to 10 men. Things did not look good despite the sunshine and beautiful scenery around the ground.
Then we equalised. (Could we hold out for extra time?)
Then we took the lead. (Could we possibly win?)
Then we scored again. (I think we are going to win)
The Final Whistle. (Colts have won the League Cup!)
What a victory! A magnificent fight back.

Forza Colts!
