Lowland League Team / Determination

Colts 3-0 Dalbeattie Star

From the kick off, it was obvious that Colts were determined to make amends for last week’s record hefty defeat. The urgency to press, to win every ball and to get goals was obvious to see. Even after the goal within the first couple of minutes there was no slowing the pace. The determination and urgency continued after the break. We had hoped it would continue second half but it’s difficult to sustain that level of energy, especially when three goals up.
Anyway, a welcome three points for us. More of the same, hopefully.
Good to see new players being brought in during the January window. Suspensions and injuries are bound to occur, so some depth of squad is needed.
Well done, Colts! Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / New Year, fresh hopes.

2020.
To people of my age 2020 definitely has a SciFi feel to it. In fact, many of the SciFi and fantasy depictions from the 70s and 80s have now become a reality. So, we live in a world where anything can happen. I suppose that the team that defeated us last week, Gretna, bear witness to the unpredictability of life and more importantly, football. Gretna came from humble beginnings and reached the Scottish Cup final in 2006. So, who knows what the future of the Colts might be but in the meantime let’s continue our journey into the unknown with optimism and hope. Our first challenge of 2020, East Kilbride, our New Town Rivals.
All the best for the New Year to the players, management, volunteers and supporters of our beloved Club.
Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / Soup, glorious soup.

What a cold Saturday afternoon! Thank goodness for the homemade soup! We might not be top of the league but I suspect our soup is top in the Scottish football soup league. It was the highlight of a disappointing afternoon. It was one of those ‘if only’ games. If only we had been awarded the penalty just before half-time we might have gone in at the break leading 1-0 but instead the penalty claim was turned down and the Shire broke away and scored. If only our second penalty claim was awarded we would still have been in contention. If only we hadn’t missed so many chances. If only..........
Nevertheless, when we went two goals down we started to play some great football and when we got one goal back things began to look promising but......the Shire destroyed our optimism with two more goals. The final score 4-1 didn’t reflect the ‘if only’ nature of the game but overall I suppose I have to admit reluctantly that they deserved their win.
I think the formation we played suited the talents and skills of the players we had available. I think it might prove successful in future games. Let’s hope so.
Forza Colts And Forza the soup!

A great away result for the Colts beating Strollers 3-2. Not an easy place to get a victory. Keeps us in contention for a top 6 finish.
The bad news: losing Craig Holmes. He has been such a great player for the club. His mazy dribbles, assists and some spectacular goals. He will be sadly missed but I am sure all the Colts fans will wish him well in his next adventure.

Lowland League Team / Second half awakening!

Colts 3-1 Caledonian Braves

What a second half performance!
A goal down at half-time. Braves had dominated and at half time it felt fortunate that we were only a goal down. Braves came very close to adding to their solitary goal, twice hitting the woodwork and two goal line clearances.
Second half, Craig Holmes was moved to the defensive playmaker position, a role that I had never seen him play. My son and I did wonder what would happen with so many attack minded players apart from the back four. Well, what happened was Colts played like a different team. Attacking and pressing as if it was a cup final. An amazing second half performance rewarded with three well taken goals and three precious points. Well done, Colts.
Forza Colts!

Lowland League Team / A comfortable victory

Colts 4-1 Uni of Edinburgh

From the first minute goal until the final whistle Colts had a commanding grip on this game. It was a pleasure to watch such an entertaining performance on a cold Saturday afternoon. Again, several chances were missed but it was good to see four very welcome goals. Colts control of the game allowed the players to express their creativity and talent. I just hope this is the beginning of a good spell for us.
(Our defeat against Penicuik is beginning to look more understanding as they progress to the next round of the cup against Patrick Thistle. They are obviously a very good side and we can take some consolation from their success)

Colts 1-0 Jeanfield Swifts

Thankfully, we are through to the next round of the tournament with one penalty goal. I suspect that this game would have broken the Colts record for most missed chances. Hopefully, this is a victory we can build on. It’s not easy for a team to gel when new players arrive but we have a squad capable of beating any team in our league even though we can’t compete financially with the top teams,
The only sour note for me was from some of the Jeanfield fans whose shouts were totally out of order in an era when we are trying to make football an inclusive sport where all fans can watch a game without having to endure language that is totally inappropriate.

Colts 1-5 Penicuik

I can’t help but feel that  if we played in the first half with the same determination and energy shown at the early part of the second half it could have been a different game. Even though we were three down before Craig Holmes scored that magnificent goal, there was hope that if we could get a second then it would be game on. Sadly, they scored a fourth and it was game over, rubbing salt into the wounds with a late fifth.
Penicuik had brought with them a sizeable support that had helped to create a great atmosphere on such a sunny day and there was no doubting the dominance of their team in the first half but I think we could have given them a much tougher game. Oh well, back to League business and some of the less prestigious cup tournaments but nevertheless well worth winning as we did two seasons ago.

Lowland League Team / Almost but not quite

Colts 2-2 EK

We almost managed to beat last year’s champions by holding onto our 2-1 score from the first half but it wasn’t to be despite the hard work and effort of every player. EK played a great passing game especially in the first half but they perhaps overplayed in the danger zone whereas Colts with less possession scored two beautiful goals. Then in the second half the determination, pressing and concentration of the Colts players was incredible. They had several opportunities to score the third goal that would probably have clinched victory for us. No doubt the sending off of Arnie Bembo forced Colts to play deep and soak up pressure but they just couldn’t hold onto their lead. Nevertheless, the players and coaching staff deserve praise for the way in which Colts so often punch above their weight in terms of the financial resources available to the ‘top’ teams. It is also obvious that Colts have a team spirit where they support each other and enjoy their football.(That is certainly how it looks to me as a fan from the outside looking in)

Forza Colts.

Colts 0-2 Bonnyrigg Rose

Despite the best efforts of the Ultras with their drums and megaphone (and the new addition of the horn), it wasn’t enough to inspire us to victory. We were outplayed by a very good side who brought with them a sizeable support.  I suppose it’s one of those games that might provide the coaches and players with some points for reflection and learning but apart from that, it’s probably best forgotten as we travel to Gretna in the hope of returning to our winning ways.

Forza Colts!
